Perianth bristles absent or shorter than the nut. Culms terete up to 50 cm high. Spikelets 5–10 mm long, mostly 2–3 together in lateral clusters. Glumes reddish-brown towards the top. Nut plano-convex, rugose. Widespread. Damp places Schoenoplectus erectus
