Erect or spreading, herbaceous annual or biennial up to 1 m high with a hard almost woody base; stems ± hairy. Leaves opposite, shortly petiolate, ovate or lanceolate to almost oblong, 2–6 cm long, softly pubescent underneath, less hairy on upper surface. Flowers numerous in long slender but rigid terminal spikes. Perianth segments 5, 3–4 mm long, reflexed after flowering. Coast. Weed in waste ground. Chaff Flower
