Leaves spirally arranged, ovate to lanceolate, 10–15 cm long, coarsely and irregularly toothed, sometimes 3-lobed, paler underneath; stipules present as 2 blunt projections. Flowers in terminal spikes. Male spikes 5–25 cm long; female spikes shorter, dense. Male flowers: perianth segments 4–5, valvate, 3 mm long; stamens numerous on a slightly raised central receptacle; filaments short, free or basally connate. Female flowers: perianth segments 6–8, 4–6 mm long; ovary 3-locular with 1 ovule per loculus; styles 3, almost free, 2-fid, densely fringed, red. Fruit 8–12 mm diam. Widespread. Along creeks. Fl. spring. Bitterbush
