Small, annual herbs with weak quadrangular stems. Leaves cauline, opposite, sessile, ovate, 5–20 mm long. Flowers axillary, solitary, on filiform pedicels which are longer than the leaves and finally recurved. Calyx and corolla divided nearly to the base. Corolla c. 10 mm diam., red, pink, orange or blue. Capsule circumscissile. Widespread. Weed of cultivation and waste ground. Introd. from Europe. Fl. spring. Pimpernel
