Small, glabrous, monoecious herbs growing in water or on mud. Leaves opposite, entire, less than 1cm long; stipules absent. Flowers axillary, subsessile, minute, unisexual, either solitary or male and female together. Calyx and corolla absent. Male flower with 1 stamen on a long filament. Female flower with a 4-locular ovary; styles 2. Fruit a 4-lobed schizocarp separating into 4 compressed 1-seeded mericarps.
