Glabrous perennial with prostrate stems rooting at the nodes. Leaves opposite, triangular in cross section, thick, firm, fleshy. Flowers large, showy, pedunculate or subsessile within the terminal pair of leaves. Perianth tube obconical, 2-keeled; the lobes very unequal. Petaloid staminodes numerous, linear, equal to or exceeding the 2 longest perianth segments. Ovary with 8 or more loculi; styles 8–11. Fruit obovoid, berry-like.
