Herbs or shrubs. Flowers mostly bisexual, minute, sessile, in clusters. Perianth segments 5, imbricate, herbaceous, enclosing the fruit, usually hooded at the summit (Fig. 34). Stamens 5 or fewer. Styles 2–3. Fruit a minute nut enclosed in the persistent perianth.
