Much branched perennial up to 1 m high. Basal leaves pinnatifid, 10–20 cm long; cauline leaves lanceolate, stem-clasping. Heads solitary or 2–3 together, terminal or sessile and axillary. Involucre oblong, 5 mm diam.; bracts in 2 rows. Florets all ligulate; rays blue, 1 cm long. Cypselas compressed, striate, 2 mm long. Pappus of minute scales. Widespread. Weed of roadsides and waste places. Introd. from Europe; Asia and Africa. Fl. summer. Chicory
