Trees. Leaves opposite or alternate, glossy on the upper surface, ± glaucous underneath. Flowers small, in axillary panicles near the ends of the branches, ± unisexual. Female flowers usually rather larger and fewer in the panicle than the males with stamens slightly imperfect. Male flowers with a carpellode. Perianth segments 6, persistent. Fertile stamens 9. Fruit a globular or ovoid black berry seated upon the cup-like floral tube.
