Herbs, ± shrubby towards the base. Flowers mostly solitary between 2 bracteoles in terminal leafy racemes. Sepals 5. Corolla pinkish, purple, bluish or white; the superior lobes arching around the indusium; lobes winged. Stamens free. Ovary inferior, incompletely 2-locular with 2 ovules. Fruit a capsule. Seed ovoid, with a caruncle.
