Monoecious annual with slender prostrate scabrous stems and simple tendrils. Leaves ovate-cordate in outline, 2–6 cm long, palmately divided into 5 obovate toothed lobes; the middle one longest and again often 3-lobed. Male flowers in clusters of 2–4. Female flowers solitary or twinned; ovary covered with rather distant bristles, marked with dark green longitudinal stripes. Corolla c. 4 mm long. Widespread. Weed, particularly in railway enclosures. Introd. from S. Africa. Paddy Melon
