Dioecious or monoecious trees or shrubs with soft wood. Leaves alternate, covered or sprinkled with rigid stinging hairs. Flowers clustered in short axillary panicles. Fruit a nut, 2–3 mm diam., usually enclosed in the enlarged fleshy perianth and pedicel.
