Annual herb, glabrous or glaucous. Leaves finely divided; basal leaves c. 20 cm long; cauline leaves smaller. Flowers solitary on long peduncles. Sepals connate into a calyptra, deciduous as flower opens. Petals 4, yellow, up to 3 cm long. Capsule ± cylindrical, c. 5 cm long, explosive when ripe. Widespread but not common. Garden escape.
