Perennial or occasionally annual herbs. Stolons present (absent in E. sphaericus). Leaves alternate, sessile, entire. Heads solitary or in dense terminal cluster surrounded by a number of leaf like bracts. Outer florets female, filiform, more in number than inner bisexual florets. Cypselas small, oblong. Pappus of free barbate hairs.
