Robust annual or perennial herbs. Stolons absent. Leaves alternate, sessile, entire. Heads small and arranged in elongated often leafy spikes, or in large corymbs of spikes. Involucre bracts with firm ± leathery tips. Leaves, stems and heads with tangled but appressed hairs. Outer florets female, filiform greater in number than inner bisexual florets. Cypsela oblong with globose hairs. Pappus of barbate hairs.
