Monoecious herbs or small shrubs, often scabrous. Leaves opposite or alternate; the upper ones gradually reduced to bracts. Flowers small, greenish or brownish, in racemes. Calyx lobes usually 3–4, persistent. Petals 2–4. Stamens 4–8. Ovary 1-locular. Styles 3–4. Fruit indehiscent.
