Plants green. Lower leaf surface sparsely hairy with hooked hairs, stellate hairs (if present), restricted to midvein. Stamens usually 4–8. Decumbent shrub with long sprawling branches. Widespread. Ss. Fl. spring–summer (hybrids may occur with H aspera ssp. aspera where the two species occur together)
