Herbs shrubs or small trees. Leaves often deeply divided. Flowers usually large. Epicalyx with 5 or more bracteoles. Calyx 5-lobed or 5-toothed. Petals usually marked with a deeper colour at the base. Staminal tube 5-lobed or truncate at the summit, with free filaments on the outside. Ovary 5-locular; stylar branches 5. Capsule 5-valved, coriaceous or membranous, dehiscing loculicidally.
