Herbs or shrubs. Leaves opposite, entire, sessile or nearly so; stipules absent. Flowers regular, bisexual. Sepals 5, imbricate. Petals 5, free, imbricate or contorted, yellow or orange. Stamens numerous, hypogynous, usually connate into a number of bundles; anthers subglobular, with a small gland at the summit. Ovary superior, 1-locular; placentas 3 (rarely 2 or 4), parietal, intruding; styles usually 3. Fruit a 3-valved septicidal capsule or berry.
