Weak, ascending pubescent annual herb. Lower leaves petiolate; upper leaves sessile, orbicular-reniform, crenately lobed, 1–2 cm long, subtending and embracing the whorls of flowers. Calyx villous, 5 mm long; teeth 5 almost equal, subulate. Corolla purplish; tube long, narrow. Widespread. Weed of cultivation and waste places. Introd. from Europe and Asia. Fl. winter–spring.
