Leaves spreading, oblong-linear, very shortly mucronate, 5–8 mm long, pungent pointed. Flowers 1–11 in short erect spikes not exceeding the leaves. Style longer than the ovary. Diffuse, heath-like shrub up to 1 m high, with wiry branches. Widespread. Heath and DSF. Sandy and clay soils. Fl. spring
