Dioecious shrubs, climbers or trees with stout axillary spines. Latex usually present although sometimes sparse. Leaves alternate, entire. Flowers in globular axillary heads. Fruits compound, globular, composed of the enlarged ± fleshy perianths and receptacles within which the small nuts are enclosed.
