Herbs, annual or perennial, decumbent to erect. Stipules entire but breaking up with age, brownish. Flowers small, mostly bisexual, clustered, often forming spike-like inflorescences. Perianth segments usually 5. Stamens 5–8. Styles 2–3. Nut enclosed in the persistent perianth.
