Usually monoecious shrubs. Leaves entire, often distichous; stipules present. Flowers small, axillary; males often clustered; females solitary. Perianth segments 6, sepaloid, divided to the base in both sexes. Male flowers with 3 coherent or free stamens and 6 glands at the base of perianth segments. Female flowers with a 3-locular, 3-lobed ovary; styles 3, free, ± 2-lobed.
