Ascending to decumbent, herbaceous perennials up to 1.5 m high. Leaves 1–2 per node, petiolate. Flowers solitary in the leaf axils. Calyx enlarged, inflated in the fruit, completely enclosing the globular edible berry. Corolla yellow with 5 coloured spots in the throat. Anthers 5 purplish.
