Prickly shrubs with imparipinnate leaves; stipules leafy, adnate to the petiole. Flowers solitary or in terminal corymbs. Floral tube deeply concave, almost closed at the mouth. Sepals and petals 5, imbricate. Stamens numerous. Carpels numerous, free, hairy, superior. Fruit a number of achenes enclosed in the fleshy floral tube; this false fruit is commonly called a “hip”.
