quinquefloraHerb with succulent jointed stems up to 25 cm long, erect or decumbent. Stem sections terete, 10–15 mm long, green. Flowers bisexual, in terminal spikes 3–5 cm long; the clusters of flowers embedded on each side of the terete sections which are similar to, but shorter than, the vegetative sections; only the anthers and styles protruding. Perianth minute, 2–5-lobed, not enlarging after flowering. Stamens 2. Styles 2. Fruit embedded in the succulent stem. Salt marshes near the coast. Fl. spring–summer. Samphire or Glasswort
