Herbs, scarcely shrubby. Flowers sessile or pedunculate between 2 bracteoles, in leafy thyrses or racemes. Sepals 5. Corolla oblique, slit to the base on the posterior side and open like a fan; tube ± hairy inside. Stamens free. Ovary inferior, 2-locular with 1 ovule per loculus or 1-locular with 2 ovules; indusium lip covered with stiff hairs. Fruit drupaceous, often rather dry.
