Herbs. Leaves 3-foliolate; leaflets usually denticulate. Flowers small, usually numerous, arranged in heads with small persistent bracts. Calyx teeth 5, equal or unequal. Petals often persistent into the fruiting stage. Stamens connate with upper one free. Fruit small, dehiscing like a legume or circumcissile or indehiscent, usually enclosed in the persistent calyx. Seeds 1–2, rarely more.
