cinereaPerennial herb up to 50 cm high, nearly glabrous to woolly (very variable). Leaves alternate, ovate-oblong to lanceolate, irregularly toothed lobed or almost entire. Heads on slender peduncles in a terminal leafless cymo-panicle. Involucre hemispherical, 5 mm diam.; the bracts linear, acute. Florets all tubular, purple or white. Cypselas cylindrical, hairy, 2 mm long. Pappus of fine bristles, 5–7 mm long. Widespread. Chiefly clay soils. Fl. summer–autumn
