Herbs. Leaves opposite. Flowers axillary and solitary or in racemes. Calyx deeply divided into 4 segments. Corolla with an indistinct tube, usually rotate, 4-lobed with 1 lobe usually broader than the others and imbricate outside in the bud. Stamens 2, epipetalous, exserted. Fruit a compressed capsule at first dehiscing loculicidally and then septifragally and often subsequently septicidally.
