Perennial herbs up to 40 cm high, usually with a woody base. Leaves alternate. Heads solitary on leafy peduncles. Involucre cylindrical or campanulate; bracts in 3–5 unequal rows, with scarious margins. Ray florets female, in 2 or more rows; rays narrow. Disc florets fewer, tubular, bisexual. Cypselas narrow, compressed. Pappus of numerous capillary bristles.
