Annual or short-lived perennial herbs. Leaves basal or cauline and alternate, flat, sessile. Heads terminal, usually solitary. Involucre hemispherical to globular; bracts numerous in several rows, papery or scarious, yellow brownish or rarely white. Florets mostly tubular, bisexual; a few filiform and female, less than half as long as the involucre. Cypselas glabrous or papillose. Pappus of barbellate bristles 6–8 mm long.
