Flowers bisexual or unisexual, regular, numerous in a large panicle which is enclosed in a large deciduous spathe when young. Perianth segments 6, in 2 whorls. Stamens usually 6, in 2 whorls, hypogynous. Ovary superior, 1–3-locular. Fruit a berry or drupaceous. 187 gen., trop. to warm temp.
