Embryo with 1 cotyledon. Sieve tube plastids with cuneate proteinacous inclusions; stem vasculature an actactostele. Plants terrestrial or aquatic; annual or perennial; usually herbaceous or if ‘woody’ and tree-like then sparingly branched. Leaves strap-like or rarely laterally expanded; venation usually parallel rarely reticulate. Roots ± fibrous or variously modified, usually lacking a tap root. Flowers usually 3-merous.
