Rhizomatous herbs, sometimes ± woody. Leaves distichous. Flowers regular, bisexual, in panicles, cymo-panicles or umbels. Perianth segments 6, free or nearly so. Stamens 6, free, often with thickened filaments; anthers often dehiscing by terminal pores. Ovary 3-locular; style simple. Fruit a berry or capsule. c. 19 gen., S. hemisphere.
