Tufted, rhizomatous perennials without elongated aerial stems. Leaves linear, sheath closed at the top. Flowers in terminal cymo-panicles, bisexual. Perianth segments 6, free. Stamens 6; filaments papillose; anthers dehiscing through slits. Ovary 3-locular with several ovules per loculus. Fruit a capsule.
