Erect, perennial herbs with fibrous roots. Leaves mostly crowded at the base of the stem, linear. Flowers in racemes with small bracts and 2 bracteoles at the base of the pedicels. Perianth segments connate into a tube much longer than the 6 lobes, red with yellowish lobes or all yellow. Anthers 6, adnate to the perianth; filaments filiform. Anthers versatile. Ovary 3-locular, superior; stigma 3-grooved, scarcely branched. Ovules numerous. Fruit a capsule with numerous seeds.
