Herbs usually with short rhizomes. Leaves mostly basal. Flowers regular, bisexual, in racemes or panicles. Perianth segments 6, free or nearly so. Stamens 6, free. Ovary 3-locular; style simple. Fruit a capsule. c. 15 gen., warm temp., particularly Africa.
