Monoecious, submerged herb in brackish water. Leaves linear, up to 5 cm long, with a basal stipular sheath; distal leaves apparently in whorls of 3. Roots single or paired at the nodes of the rhizome. Flowers unisexual, usually 1 male and 1 female at each leaf whorl; male flowers with a single stamen; female flowers usually with 4--5 carpels surrounded by a sheath; stigma funnel-shaped.
