Herbs with short rhizomes. Leaves mostly basal. Flowers regular, bisexual, in terminal racemes panicles or umbels. Perianth segments 6, free or connate at the base. Stamens 6, 3 sometimes as staminodes, free. Ovary 3-locular; style simple or 3-lobed. Fruit a capsule. c. 20 gen., temp., particularly Australia.
