Perennial herb with fibrous roots. Leaves linear, with broadened leaf bases, usually tufted leaving leafless intervals on the stems. Flowers almost sessile in pedunculate heads surrounded by scariose bracts; inner bracts margins jagged to finely divided. Perianth segments 6, in 2 whorls; outer whorl free, scarious; inner whorl freee or connate basally. white to pink. Stamens 6; inner whorl adnate to perianth. Ovary apparently stipitate; ovules 2–4 per loculus. Fruit a capsule. Flowers nocturnally.
