Spikelets pedicellate, c. 12 mm long, disarticulating above the glumes and between the lemmas. Glumes equal. Lemmas hairy on the back, usually only the lowest containing a bisexual flower. Panicles up to 60 cm long. Perennials with thick horizontal rhizomes and crowded almost woody culms 2–6 m high. Leaf blades up to 7 cm long. Along River banks, e.g., Macdonald River, or in damp places. Introd. from Asia. Giant Reed
