Spikelets with few florets, in a loose panicle, disarticulating above the glumes; rhachilla hairy below the lemmas. Glumes scarious (at least at the top), tapering. Lemmas smaller than the glumes, 2-cleft at the top, usually with a long twisted dorsal awn; terminal lemma often small and empty or rudimentary.
