Shrubs, stems terete or broadly flattened, cladodes. Leaves simple, sometimes reduced to scales, entire, opposite or alternate, not strongly reticulate; stipules usually small. Flowers axillary, solitary or in clusters of 2–3, with imbricate bracts at the base of the peduncles. Calyx 5-lobed; upper 2 usually broader and larger than the others and ± united. Corolla yellow and red; standard usually reflexed, c. twice as long as the calyx. Stamens connate into a sheath open above at least at the base. Legume flat, not winged, opening along both sutures.
