Annual or biennial, tufted herbs. Spikelets with several florets, large, pedicellate, disarticulating above the glumes. Glumes unequal or subequal, acute or shortly awned. Lemmas convex on the back or keeled, 2-toothed at the apex, awned terminally or from a little below the notch in the apex or awnless. Inflorescence an open or spike-like panicle.
