7 species in Aust. (3 endemic); all states and territories except Vic. and Tas.

Tufted annual herbs. Culms and leaves capillary, up to 0.5 mm wide. Leaf sheath usually bearded. Inflorescence a head or branched. Involucre bracts leaflike. Spikelets angular several to many-flowered. Rachilla winged. Glumes spirally imbricate, keeled side nerves absent. Flowers bisexual. Perianth absent. Stamens 1–3. Style 3-fid, with a dilated base which is persistent on the nut. Nut 3-angled.
