Female glumes 1.5–2.5 mm long, red-brown, midrib green, margins hyline. Utricle beak prominent, c. 1 mm long, faintly nerved. Upper spikes with male and female spikelets, low spikes with all female spikelets. Uncommon at high altitudes. Alpine habitat
