Erect, perennial herb with corms. Leaves linear, c. 90 cm long and 3 cm wide. Flowers irregular, oblique, in spikes c. 25 cm long; spathes scarious. Perianth segments red, connate into a curved tube c. 4 cm long, narrow below, widening abruptly c. 1 cm above the ovary; inner lobes somewhat larger than outer ones; posterior lobe largest. Stamens arranged onto the upper side of the flower. Stylar branches entire, only slightly dilated. Capsule ovoid. Garden escape near habitation. Introd. from S. Africa. Fl. summer
