Chorizandra

Rhizomatous perennial herbs with terete culms and a few basal leaves. Culms and leaves often transversely septate, up to 80 cm high. Spikelet solitary, apparently lateral, compact, globular to ovoid-globular, with numerous flowers, with one leafy involucral bract apparently continuing the culm. Glumes spirally imbricate; some lower ones empty. Perianth scales numerous; 2 outer lateral ones keeled; others in several rows. Stamens 6–12 rarely more. Style deeply 2- or 4-fid. Nut ovoid-globular, with c. 8 longitudinal ribs.
